Looks Are Sorta Important

Minecraft has done a good job teaching gamers that good graphics are not the end all be all for a good game. This is a misconception in the gaming industry has been around for the past… as long as anyone can remember. It seems that more and more the content of the game is being cut so the game engine can support intensely demanding graphics. Yeah, sure, graphics in games have gotten pretty stunning, but so what? We can’t do half the things we used to be able to do, and the shock of the new graphics wears off after an hour or so.

This would lead one to the conclusion that graphics are unimportant. This is true – to a point. The big example here is Dwarf Fortress. We know, there are a lot of die hard fans  that will hate this statement, but the graphics of Dwarf Fortress are so bad that few people can get into it. Dwarf Fortress, from the stories, sounds like a freaking awesome game that could put Minecraft to shame. But no one knows what they are looking at when they play Dwarf Fortress.

A game should strive for graphics that are understandable, after it has created a mechanic that breaks barriers.

So, what do you think?
